Thomas, 37, German expat. Has lived in Dubai for four years. Trains at DKing Combat, Al Quoz.
Thomas flew back to Frankfurt in November for his mother's birthday. He'd been in Dubai for four years, working in logistics operations, and visited Germany twice a year. His family knew him well.
At dinner on the first night, his mother asked if he was on medication. He laughed. She was serious. "You're different," she said. "Slower." She meant he occupied his chair differently. He listened without waiting to speak. He didn't check his phone during a meal. When his brother said something that would usually have sparked an argument, Thomas considered it, responded briefly, and let it go.
He told her he'd started training. She asked what kind. Combat training, he said. She looked confused. She'd expected yoga.
He knew this about himself. He processed fast, decided fast, got frustrated when others didn't move at the same pace. In meetings he was effective. In the evenings after difficult days, he was present in body only. He'd come to DKing Combat because he wanted something physical with structure — something that demanded actual attention, not just his body.
He'd expected intensity — fast, loud, aggressive. What he found was the opposite. DKing Saad is precise and measured in a way that requires you to match the energy. The sessions are demanding, but the demand is technical. You can't power through imprecise technique. You have to slow down enough to do it correctly.
"I came in with the habit of moving fast to cover gaps in precision. He dismantled that completely. You can't go fast until you can go correctly, and correct takes time."
Thomas found this infuriating for three weeks. Then useful. Then he started applying it outside the gym in ways he hadn't planned.
After dinner, she asked what had changed. He tried to explain it and found it harder than expected.
"The best I could do was say that I've spent six months learning to do things slowly and correctly under conditions that make you want to rush. And that it turns out most things in life are improved by that."
She seemed satisfied. She told him he looked well. He told her he felt it. He visited Frankfurt again for Christmas. His mother didn't ask about medication. She just said it was nice to have him back.
