Her Daughter Called From Toronto. "Mum, You Seem Different."

Layla, 49, Dubai. Her daughter moved to Toronto. The call four months into training changed something.

Layla's daughter Sara had moved to Toronto for a master's degree in September. They spoke every Sunday on video call. In February — four months after Sara left, four months after Layla had started training at DKing Combat — Sara said something that Layla kept turning over for days afterward.

She'd said: Mum, you seem different. Not in a worried way. In a noticing way. Then she'd said: more like you.

Layla had started training for practical reasons

Her son had been suggesting self-defense training for two years. She'd resisted. When Sara left for Toronto the flat went quieter than it had been since before the children were born. The suggestion became easier to act on when there was less to resist. She applied to DKing Combat in October, the month after Sara left.

The first sessions were hard in ways she hadn't anticipated. Not physically only — she'd expected that. What she hadn't expected was how much she cared whether she got it right.

"DKing Saad is a precise teacher. He noticed things I didn't know I was doing wrong, explained why they mattered, waited while I corrected them. I found that I wanted his approval very much. I hadn't wanted anyone's approval in a long time."

What changed over four months

She started taking up more space in other parts of her life. She interrupted more in conversations where she had something to say. She went to a restaurant alone on a Wednesday evening and found she was entirely comfortable. She walked differently. She didn't analyse why; she noticed it and moved on.

Sara noticed it on that February call and said: more like you. Layla's first thought was that she'd been less like herself than she'd realised. Her second thought was that this was fixable, and she was in the middle of fixing it.

She still trains twice a week

"My children were my identity for many years. That's not a complaint — it was a privilege. But they're building their lives somewhere else now, and I'm building mine here. Training at DKing Combat is part of that."

She trains at Max Burn Gym, Al Quoz. She told her son she'd finally done what he suggested, two years late. He said better late. She said: not late. Right time.

DKing Combat System is application-only training at Max Burn Gym, Al Quoz 3, Dubai. Limited spots per intake.
